Stay Calm and Carry On

25 Feb

There comes a time in your life, maybe a few more than there really should be, where you are confronted with a bunch of situations that bombard you all at once.

These circumstances, if you’re lucky, can help you realize that no matter what you try to do or how hard you attempt to improve there are always people who are going to be better looking, smarter, more physically fit, get that better job you have been working for, and that’s simply part of life and that is ok!

“Don’t compare yourself to others, there’s no comparison between the sun and the moon.  They both shine when it’s their time.” ~ Unknown

Be happy with you!

Learning to accept yourself, the situation you’re going through for what it is, working with it and move on, easy, right?  Maybe for some, but then there are those of us that these kinds of situations can cause massive anxiety and a flood of other emotions. Acceptance is so much easier said than put into practice.

Everything from material things people want, the desire to look physically better, getting that awesome promotion with the higher salary are not always in your grasp.  They all take hard work and determination.

And there is plenty to be grateful for every day. From sunlight to health, from a hot meal to family (imperfect as they may be), be grateful and celebrate!

However, sometimes for whatever reason, even when you give it your everything, those things may not happen.  So, work harder and things get better, right?  Sometimes, that is the answer and just because it did not happen the first time you tried, you have to stay focused and positive to work towards your dreams and goals with purpose and passion.

Many times, unfortunately, accomplishing those goals may not come as easy as you had hoped. On the other hand, you should never let anxiety, trauma, or any of life’s ups and downs, stop you from giving everything, to get yourself where you want to be in life; as long as it’s not at the detriment of someone else.

Creative visualization

There are so many ways to “stay calm and carry on”, but there are many great ways to keep yourself calm, focused and continue to challenge yourself every day, especially if you have severe anxiety as I do.

I highly recommend the process called Creative Visualization or Affirmations.  One popular book to help with this is known as Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Get What You Want in Life, by Shakti Gawain.

I was first introduced to this amazing author and creative visualization in my teens.  Ha-ha, imagine a teenager trying to admit to something like that may work AND entails relaxing and self-actualization.

Then again…

Is that not, in part, what teen years are supposed to be the beginning of, learning who you are and what you want to do with your life?    Admittedly, I read the book more than once. Thanks, B.K.

What is creative visualization?

Creative visualization, as explained in the book introduced by Shakti Gawain, in 1978, 1995 and 2002 Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life, is the art of using mental imagery and affirmations to make positive changes in your life.

You can use your imagination to create what it is you want in your life.  For example, if you want to find ways to relax, think of places that help you loosen up and enjoy, for me, it’s the beach.

Learn to breathe

So, I would attempt at closing my eyes to relax and visualize, but at first it was disconcerting.   If closing your eyes is uncomfortable just put yourself in a relaxing position, focus on a point in the room and breathe.

I love picturing myself at the beach watching the waves and walking along the sand.  I say to myself something to the effect of “I am relaxed and calm, nothing around me can change that”.  You can practice these statements as many times throughout the day as you feel comfortable with or you feel the need to relax.

Use affirmations, which are positive reinforcers that are spoken, suggested and repeated  every day (whenever you can fit it in to your schedule but should be repeated at least two-four times a day).

By doing this, you can  encourage yourself by speaking or reading to be a happier, more content and relaxed person.  Sometimes easier said than done.  That’s why it takes practice and like anything that takes time, believing in yourself!

Affirmations are always spoken in the present and positive tense.

When you are saying them,  think positively as if you truly believe them, even if at first, they sound silly.

There is a bunch of scientific information out there showing how the more confident and genuine words in people’s lives are, they can completely transform your whole body and mind.

Put these into practice on a regular basis and they can truly help you feel better about yourself and your life; even if things aren’t going the way you hoped, these statements can help you look at things in a different light.
